By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
The 10 words are all concrete and highly relevant to a school day at A1 level. Cover-and-test. Pronunciation: timetable /ˈtaɪmteɪbl/ (stress on first syllable), canteen /kænˈtiːn/ (stress on second), uniform /ˈjuːnɪfɔːm/. Concept-checks: "Do you have a timetable on paper or in your head?" / "Is a canteen a classroom or a place to eat?" / "Do all schools in your country have uniforms?" Part C optional.
Present Simple is the core grammar of A1–A2 and must be taught explicitly with all four forms before students encounter them in texts. The most important points at this level:
1. Third-person -s: Students almost always forget it. Drill "He/She/It + verb + s" separately. Board examples after every vocabulary word.
2. Negative: don't vs doesn't. The most common error: "She don't like homework." → "She doesn't like homework." AND after doesn't, bare infinitive: "She doesn't study" NOT "She doesn't studies".
3. Questions: Do vs Does. "Does she study?" (NOT "Does she studies?") — the -s moves to does.
4. Short answers: "Yes, she does." / "No, she doesn't." — never just "Yes" or "No".
5. Spelling: The y → ies rule catches many students: study → studies, carry → carries.
Board the three common errors BEFORE exercises and leave them visible.
The text (~100 words) uses only Present Simple throughout with natural signal words. Gist: Tom is a 13-year-old who loves science and has a clear school routine. T/F/NG answers: 1 T · 2 F (he doesn't like Mondays because he has five lessons, not because he doesn't like school) · 3 T · 4 NG (no mention of his parents) · 5 T ("he always does his homework after dinner"). After Tasks 1 and 2, ask students to circle all signal words in the text.
Read at a very slow, clear A1–A2 pace — pause between sentences. The script uses all four PS forms plus signal words. Task 1: 1-B (Anna starts school at half past eight) · 2-C (her favourite subject is art) · 3-A (she doesn't eat in the canteen — she brings a sandwich). Task 2: (1) starts / half past eight · (2) always · (3) art · (4) doesn't eat / brings a sandwich · (5) does / watches TV / reads.
The class survey (Task A) is the key communicative activity — students ask three different classmates the same questions and note answers. This gives multiple repetitions of Do/Does questions and short answers. Monitor for: Does (not Do) with he/she/it, short answers (Yes, she does — not just "yes"), and no -s after doesn't. The role-play (Task B) activates all four forms in a natural interview context.
Students write 60–80 words about their school day — the shorter count is appropriate for A1. The self-check explicitly asks for all four forms: affirmative (+s for he/she/it), negative (don't/doesn't), question (Do/Does), and signal word. Encourage a clear sequence: morning → school → afternoon/evening. Stronger students: add a question form ("Do you have the same favourite subject?") or a negative comparison ("My friend doesn't like maths but I do").
· PS Affirmative (I/you/we): "I start at half past eight" / "I always arrive" / "I always do my homework" / "I love art" / "I sometimes draw" / "I like science"
· PS Affirmative (he/she/it): "She always checks our homework" / "My school starts early" / "It does" / "She does"
· PS Negative: "I don't eat in the canteen" / "I don't play computer games" / "I don't really like them"
· PS Questions: "Do you like school?" / "What time do you start?" / "Does your teacher check?" / "What is your favourite subject?" / "Does your school have a canteen?" / "What do you do after school?"
· Short answers: "Yes, I do!" / "Yes, she does." / "Yes, it does."
· Signal words: "always · sometimes · usually · often · never · every day · on Tuesdays and Thursdays · in the morning / evening"
