By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
The 10 phrases are common weekend activities — A2 level, concrete and personal. Cover-and-test: students cover the right column and recall the meaning. After Part A, ask: "Which of these did you do last weekend?" — this makes the vocabulary immediately active. Note that all 10 verbs are used in the grammar and reading sections, so learning them well here pays off throughout the lesson. Part C matching is optional.
Past Simple is the main structure of this lesson. The reference table covers all forms — affirmative (regular and irregular), negative, and question. Key points to emphasise:
Regular verbs: add -ed. Spelling rules: double consonant (stop→stopped), drop -e (like→liked), y→ied (study→studied). Only the relevant ones appear in this lesson — don't overload.
Irregular verbs: must be memorised. Drill the 7 key ones from the board before Exercise 1.
Negative: didn't + bare infinitive — not didn't went. This is the most common error at this level.
Questions: Did + subject + infinitive — not Did you went. Short answers: Yes, I did. / No, I didn't.
PS vs PS contrast: "I usually go for a walk at weekends." (PS habit) vs "Last weekend, I went for a walk." (PS past event). Same tense name, different use — make this explicit.
The text (~120 words) uses only Past Simple and Present Simple. Gist: Tom had a mixed weekend — a good Saturday and a quiet Sunday. T/F/NG answers: 1 T · 2 F (they watched a comedy, not a horror film) · 3 T · 4 NG (no mention of his sister) · 5 F (he didn't go to the gym — he stayed at home). Push students to write full sentences in their answers.
The script uses only Past Simple and Present Simple. Read at a clear A2–B1 pace. Task 1 answers: 1-C (she visited her parents) · 2-B (they cooked a big meal together) · 3-A (he played football). Task 2: (1) restaurant · (2) film · (3) football · (4) shopping · (5) didn't enjoy.
The interview prompts Past Simple questions and answers throughout. Monitor especially for: didn't + infinitive (not didn't went), correct question word order (Did you go? not You went?), and short answers (Yes, I did / No, I didn't). Collect 4–5 errors for delayed feedback. Discussion questions activate PS for habits (Present Simple) alongside past events — this reinforces the contrast.
Students write about their own last weekend. The text should be entirely in Past Simple — no future or progressive. Encourage a simple chronological structure: Saturday morning → Saturday afternoon → evening → Sunday. Negative sentences add variety: "I didn't go to the gym because I was tired." Self-check box. Stronger students: encourage a question form at the end ("What did you do last weekend?") or a comparison with this coming weekend.
