By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
The 10 words cover both football vocabulary and general motivation vocabulary, which allows natural links between the two themes throughout the lesson. Cover-and-test. Pronunciation: achieve /əˈtʃiːv/ (stress on second syllable), effort /ˈefət/ (stress on first), captain /ˈkæptɪn/. Concept-checks: "Do you score a goal when you play well or when the ball goes into the net?" / "Is a coach a player or a teacher of sport?" Part C optional.
The text (~130 words) uses only Present Simple and Future Simple. Gist: Marcus is a 16-year-old footballer who trains hard every day and dreams of playing professionally. T/F/NG answers: 1 T · 2 F (he trains in the morning, not in the evening) · 3 T · 4 NG (no mention of his school) · 5 T ("I will never give up"). Push students to identify which tense is used in each answer and why.
The script uses both target tenses naturally — PS for what the team always does, Will for promises and predictions about the match. Read at a clear A2–B1 pace. Task 1 answers: 1-B (they train every morning) · 2-C (the coach says they will win because they believe in each other) · 3-A (the captain will lead the team from the front). Task 2: (1) every morning · (2) effort · (3) believe · (4) captain / will lead · (5) will score.
Present Simple vs Future Simple (will) is the core contrast of this lesson. Three uses of will are taught explicitly because students at A2–B1 often know it only as a "future tense" without understanding the nuance:
1. Prediction: "I think they will win the match." (based on your belief)
2. Promise: "I will never give up." (a commitment)
3. Spontaneous decision: "OK, I will train harder." (decided at this moment)
Common error: "I will train every day." with a PS signal word (every day → PS habit, not will). Also: "He wills score" — no auxiliary needed; "He will to score" — no to after will.
The coach/player role-play naturally activates PS (what do you usually do? what does your team practise?) and Will (what will you do differently? what will happen if you train harder?). Monitor for the PS/will distinction — students often use will for habits ("every day I will train" → wrong → PS). Collect errors for delayed feedback. Discussion questions 2 and 3 invite both tenses freely.
Students write about their own goals — in sport or in any area of their life. PS for what they currently do, Will for their plans and promises. Encourage a clear structure: present situation (PS) → future plan (will) → promise (will + never/always). The self-check box targets both tenses plus vocabulary. Stronger students: encourage a negative form ("I won't give up") or a conditional ("If I train harder, I will achieve my goal").
· Present Simple (habits/facts): "Every morning you come to this training ground" / "You put in the effort" / "You never give up" / "This team trains harder than any other team" / "This team supports each other" / "What makes a good team"
· Future Simple — prediction: "you will show everyone" / "I believe we will win this match"
· Future Simple — promise: "I will give everything I have today" / "I will lead from the front"
· Future Simple — spontaneous/motivational: "go out there and score some goals!"

Speaking
SpeakingWork in pairs. Student A is a coach. Student B is a young footballer. The coach interviews the player about their routine and dreams. Then swap roles.
Card A — Coach
Interview the player. Ask:
- "How often do you train?"
- "What do you usually do before a match?"
- "Do you believe you can achieve your goal?"
- "What will you do differently next season?"
- "What do you think will happen in the tournament?"
Use both tenses in your questions.
Card B — Player
Answer the coach's questions. Describe your routine (PS) and your plans (will):
- "I train … every …"
- "I always / usually …"
- "I believe I will …"
- "Next season I will …"
- "I promise I won't …"
Then swap roles.
Future (will): "I think I will …" | "I promise I won't …" | "I'm sure we will …" | "One day I will …"
Talk in groups of three.
