This is a knowledge/fun-facts lesson, not an SEL or HOTS lesson — high engagement, low academic weight. The grammar star is identical across the whole Origins Series. Two extra “Wow Fact” call-outs (ancient Persian ice houses; strange modern flavours in Japan) were added to Handout 3. All vocabulary beyond the 7 target words was checked to stay at A1\u2013A2 level. Like Pasta and Fish and Chips, this topic centres on a popular myth (the ice cream cone “invented” at a famous 1904 fair) that turns out to be false once you check the real historical record.

The History of Ice Cream
Long ago, in China, people mixed milk and rice, and packed it in snow to make it cold and hard. This early ice cream was a treat for kings and rich families only. Many years later, in Italy, a chef wrote down a recipe for a milk dessert, in 1694 — many people call this the first true ice cream recipe. Soon, rich families in France and England also enjoyed frozen cream at big dinners. At first, people made ice cream by hand. They stirred it again and again in a pot of ice and salt. In 1843, a new machine made this job much easier — you just turned a handle, and the machine did the mixing. Once ice cream became easier to make, more and more people could enjoy it. Many people believe that a seller first put ice cream in a wafer cone at a big fair in the USA, in 1904. But old pictures and cookbooks show people eating ice cream from cones many years before that! At the fair, a seller probably just made the cone popular, not new. Now, ice cream is one of the most popular foods in the world, and people enjoy hundreds of different flavours.
Long, long ago, people in Persia (modern Iran) built huge cooling buildings from mud, called yakhchals, to store ice in the hot desert — without any electricity!
Some ice cream flavours today are very strange — in Japan, you can try flavours like wasabi or even squid ink!
