Lesson Overview
Topic
Where did the hamburger actually come from? A light, fact-filled lesson about the world’s most famous sandwich — with a few genuinely surprising twists (nobody really knows who invented it, at least five different people claim it, and one company painted its restaurants white just to look clean).
Central question
“Where do you think the hamburger first came from? Do we know exactly who invented it?”
Level
A1–A2
Duration
45–60 minutes
Grammar ★
First, people + Past Simple. Now, people + Present Simple. — “First, people didn’t trust hamburgers. Now, it is one of the most popular foods in the world.” The series-wide pattern: simple past for history, simple present for today. Allowed grammar beyond Past/Present Simple: can/could (ability, not conditional) and there is/are/was/were.
Tone guidance
Light, fast-moving, a little playful. This is a "fun facts" lesson, not a serious discussion lesson — let students enjoy the mystery. As with the rest of the Origins Series, the Reading text varies its past-time markers instead of repeating the same phrase. Like Bubble Tea, this topic centres on a real, unresolved dispute rather than a single legend, which tends to spark good discussion.
Spelling
British English throughout (colour, favourite, realise).
Characters
Mia & Leo (used throughout the series)
Vocabulary
meat · bun · fair · clean · claim · castle · popular
Writing
40–50 words · 2+ First…Now… sentences
Background

This is a knowledge/fun-facts lesson, not an SEL or HOTS lesson — high engagement, low academic weight. The grammar star is identical across the whole Origins Series. Two extra “Wow Fact” call-outs (at least five separate people/places claim the invention; the white-castle-shaped restaurants built to look clean) were added to Handout 3. All vocabulary beyond the 7 target words was checked to stay at A1–A2 level. Note: the word “fair” is used here only as a noun (a big outdoor event) to avoid confusion with the adjective sense used elsewhere in the series.

Listening Script — "The Hamburger Mystery"
Mia & Leo. First…Now… pattern. Simple grammar only. Read TWICE.
Leo:
Did you know nobody really knows who invented the hamburger?
Mia:
Really? How is that possible?
Leo:
Long ago, people in Hamburg, Germany just ate meat patties with a knife and fork.
Mia:
So who put it in a bun?
Leo:
That’s the mystery! A boy named Charlie says he did it in 1885. A man named Louis says he did it in 1900.
Mia:
They can’t both be right!
Leo:
Maybe they’re both a little right. Nobody has real proof.
Mia:
That’s actually kind of funny.
Leo:
I know! And here’s something interesting — one company painted its restaurants white, just to look clean.
Mia:
Why did they need to look clean?
Leo:
Because people were scared that shops used bad meat! First, people didn’t trust hamburgers. Now, it’s one of the most popular foods in the world.

Fun Facts · Around the World

The History of the Hamburger

Long ago, the German city of Hamburg was famous for its high-quality beef. People there cut meat into small pieces and cooked it as a flat, round patty. In the 1800s, many German families moved to the USA, and they brought this recipe with them. People in America called it “Hamburg steak.” At first, people ate Hamburg steak with a knife and fork, on a plate — not in a bun. One day, in 1885, a fifteen-year-old boy named Charlie sold a beef patty between two pieces of bread at a fair in Wisconsin, so people could eat and walk at the same time. Many years later, in 1900, a man named Louis did the same thing at his small restaurant in Connecticut. Both men, and other people too, now claim they invented the first hamburger! Nobody knows for sure who was really first. In 1904, millions of visitors tried the hamburger for the first time at a huge fair in St. Louis, and it quickly became popular. Back then, some people worried that shops used bad meat. Because of this, in 1921, a new company built small restaurants shaped like a white castle, to look extra clean. Today, people eat hamburgers in almost every country in the world.
