על מנת לשאול האם היה אדם, חיה או חפץ במקום ספציפי אליו אנחנו מתייחסים, נעביר את was לראש המשפט כדי לבנות שאלה. ייצא:

למשל:

Was there a girl at the window?

Was there a bird on the fence?

Was there a cat under the chair?

Was there a book on the table?

Was there a pencil next to the book?

פשוט ענו Yes או No, ואחריו נחזיר את there was/were. אם התשובה שלילית, לא נשכח לשים not אחרי was/were :
