By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
The 10 words cover the key vocabulary for describing holidays and travel at A2 level. Cover-and-test. Pronunciation: souvenir /ˌsuːvəˈnɪə/ (stress on final syllable), scenery /ˈsiːnəri/ (stress on first), destination /ˌdestɪˈneɪʃn/. Concept-checks: "Do you buy a souvenir before or after you visit a place?" / "Is a resort a single hotel or a whole holiday area?" / "Do you pack a suitcase before or after your holiday?" Part C optional.
The text (~130 words) uses Present Simple (routines and facts) and would like (wishes for next time). Gist: the Parker family is on holiday in Portugal and has a wonderful daily routine. T/F/NG answers: 1 T · 2 F (they explore the local market in the morning, not the afternoon) · 3 T · 4 NG (no mention of weather) · 5 T ("they would like to come back next summer"). Push students to identify which structure expresses a routine vs a wish.
The script uses all four target structures in natural conversation — would like for wishes, prepositions of time, PS for habits, PP for current actions. Read at a clear A2–B1 pace. Task 1: 1-C (she would like to go to Japan) · 2-B (in August, on the 15th) · 3-A (she is looking at hotels right now). Task 2: (1) Japan · (2) in August · (3) guided tour · (4) local food · (5) is searching / is looking.
Would like: polite/more formal version of want. Key points:
— would like to + infinitive: "I would like to visit Rome." (NOT would like visiting)
— Question: Would you like to … ? Answer: Yes, I would. / No, I wouldn't.
— Short form: I'd like to
Prepositions of time: the three-column grid (at / on / in) is the clearest presentation. Key traps: in the morning/afternoon/evening BUT at night · at the weekend (British English) vs on the weekend (American English) — flag this.
PS vs PP: PS = regular holiday habits ("we always sunbathe in the morning") vs PP = happening right now ("we are sunbathing right now"). Signal words are the clearest guide.
The hotel booking role-play naturally activates would like for polite requests, prepositions of time for booking dates, PS for describing holiday habits, and PP for describing what is happening. Monitor for: would like to + infinitive (NOT would like + -ing), correct preposition choice, PS/PP distinction. Delayed feedback. Discussion questions 2 and 3 invite free use of all structures.
Students write about their dream holiday. Encourage: a would like sentence for their wish, a preposition of time for when/where, a PS sentence for what they always do on holiday, and a PP sentence for what they imagine doing right now. Self-check covers all four structures plus vocabulary.
