My Birthday Party

A1–A2 reading with repeated Past Simple had.

My Birthday Party

A1–A2

Last week, I had a birthday party. It was so much fun! I had a big cake with candles, and I had a lot of friends over to celebrate with me.

We had games to play. We had musical chairs, and I had a prize for the winner.

My parents had decorations everywhere. They had balloons, streamers, and a banner that said “Happy Birthday.”

I had presents from my friends. I had a new toy and a book, and I had a great time opening them.

After the party, I had a sleepover with my best friend. We had popcorn and watched a movie. It was a fantastic day!

5

My Pet Adventure

A2 reading about a hamster and a small problem.

Jim the Hamster

A2

Last year, I had a pet hamster named Jim. Jim had a cosy cage with a wheel. He had soft fur and tiny paws.

One day, Jim had an adventure. He escaped from his cage and ran all around my room. I had to find him quickly.

I had a treat that Jim loved, so I had an idea. I put the treat in his cage, and Jim went back inside to get it. Then I closed the cage door, and Jim was safe again.

After his adventure, I told Jim that he should stay in his cage, but I also gave him some extra playtime outside it.

After that, I had to be more careful with Jim. I checked the cage door every day.

6

My Last Summer Holiday

A2–B1 reading about travel, friendship and beach activities.

A Holiday by the Sea

A2–B1

Last summer, I had an amazing holiday with my family. We stayed near the beach and had a cosy cottage. It had a big porch with a beautiful view of the ocean.

During our holiday, I had a new friend named Sam. Sam had a surfboard, and we had a lot of fun riding the waves together. We had a picnic on the beach with sandwiches, fruit, and cold lemonade.

In the evenings, we had campfires on the beach. We had marshmallows and chocolate for s'mores. The night sky had many stars, and we had a telescope to look at them.

I had a collection of seashells from the shore. They had many different shapes and colours. I also had a notebook where I wrote about each shell.

We had a wonderful time during the holiday, and I had many new adventures. It was my first holiday in such a beautiful place.
