Birthdays

The third Birthdays lesson: an A2–B2 grammar-focused continuation using the First Conditional for birthday plans, weather decisions, free-time activities and future arrangements.

Lesson overview

Future plans and real possibilities in a birthday context.

Objective

Students learn to use the First Conditional to talk about realistic future possibilities and their likely results. The lesson develops from controlled structure work to reading, role-play, discussion and writing.

The core grammar and shorter readings are mainly A2–B1. The B2 part comes from extended discussion, flexible role-play and longer writing tasks, so the A2–B2 label works best as a layered range rather than one uniform difficulty level.

2

First Conditional

Real future conditions and likely results.

Basic Form

If + Present Simple, will + base verb
If it rains, we will move the birthday party indoors.

Negative

If + Present Simple, will not / won't + base verb
If the weather is bad, we won't have the party in the park.

Questions

Will + subject + base verb ... if + Present Simple?
Will you come if the party starts at six?

Birthday Plans and the Weather

A2–B1 reading about preparing for a birthday outing.

Leo’s Birthday Plan

A2–B1

Leo's birthday is tomorrow, and he wants to spend the afternoon outside with his friends. They are planning to play football in the park and then have pizza.

Leo checks the weather forecast because there is a chance of rain. He thinks, “If it rains tomorrow, we will play games at my house instead.”

He also has another plan. If the weather stays dry, they will meet in the park at two o'clock. If it gets very hot, they will take extra water and sit in the shade.

Leo is less worried now because he has a plan for different kinds of weather.

5

The Birthday Picnic

A2–B1 reading about a weather-dependent party plan.

Sara and Tom Plan a Birthday Picnic

A2–B1

Sara and Tom are helping their friend Mia plan a birthday picnic in the park on Saturday. They have been checking the weather forecast all week.

If the weather is good, they will have the picnic under the big trees near the lake. They will bring sandwiches, fruit, a birthday cake and outdoor games.

If it is rainy or too cold, they will move the celebration to Tom's house. They will order pizza, play board games and watch a film.

Mia likes both plans, so she is not worried. “If everyone is together, I will have a good birthday,” she says.

6

Sophie’s Birthday Party

B1–B2 reading about changing a party plan.

Plan A and Plan B

B1–B2

Sophie's birthday is coming up, and she wants to have a special party with her friends. Her ideal plan is an outdoor picnic in the park with games and a barbecue.

Sophie has been checking the weather forecast every day. One evening, the forecast says there is a slight chance of rain. Sophie is worried that the weather will ruin her plans.

Her friend Emma reassures her. “If it rains, we will move the party indoors to your living room. We can play board games and have a movie night instead.”

Sophie smiles. “That's a great idea. If the weather stays dry, we'll have the picnic. If it starts raining, we'll use Plan B.”

On the day of the party, they set up in the park and keep an eye on the sky.

A Birthday Weekend Getaway

B1–B2 reading about a birthday trip and bad weather.

Amy’s Birthday Trip

B1–B2

Amy and Mark have planned a weekend getaway for Amy's birthday. They are going to stay in a cosy cabin in the mountains and spend time outdoors.

On the morning of their departure, Amy checks the weather app. It says there is a high chance of rain and thunderstorms throughout the weekend.

Amy is disappointed. “If it rains all weekend, we won't be able to do the outdoor activities I planned.”

Mark suggests a Plan B. “If it rains, we will explore the nearby town, visit a museum, try local restaurants and celebrate your birthday there.”

Amy feels better. They pack raincoats, umbrellas and board games. “If the storm gets worse, we'll stay in the cabin and have a birthday movie night,” she says.
