Lesson overview

Third Conditional practice within the Art theme.

Objective

Students will form and use the Third Conditional to discuss unreal past situations and imagined outcomes, using art exhibitions, artists, galleries and creative decisions as the shared context.

  • Form: If + Past Perfect, would have + past participle
  • Negative forms with hadn't and wouldn't have
  • Alternative outcomes with could have and might have
  • Reading, speaking, role-play and writing

The source includes “listening” in the objective, but no audio or listening task is supplied. This version therefore presents the skills actually supported by the materials.

2

Third Conditional

Past situations that did not happen and their imagined results.

Basic form

Use the Past Perfect in the if-clause and would have + past participle in the result clause.

If + had + past participle, would have + past participle
If I had seen the announcement, I would have gone to the exhibition.

Negative form

Use hadn't or wouldn't have when the imagined past result is negative.

If + hadn't + past participle, wouldn't have + past participle
If the gallery hadn't closed early, we wouldn't have missed the final room.

Could have / might have

Use these forms when the imagined result is possible rather than certain.

If + Past Perfect, could / might have + past participle
If she had entered the competition, she might have won a prize.

The Exhibition You Missed

B2 reading with natural Third Conditional examples.

The Exhibition You Missed

B2

Imagine you had gone to that art exhibition last month. You would have been amazed by the intricate paintings and sculptures on display. The event took place in a renowned gallery, and art enthusiasts from around the world attended. If you had taken the chance to attend, your perspective on contemporary art might have broadened.

Unfortunately, you didn't hear about the exhibition in time. If you had seen the announcement earlier, you would have marked the date on your calendar. You could have spent hours admiring the creativity of the artists and talking to other art lovers.

If you had known about the exhibition, you might have invited your friends to join you. It could have been a memorable outing, full of conversations about each artwork's meaning and inspiration. You would have shared the experience and perhaps discovered new artists together.

Looking back now, you realise how different things might have been if you had gone. The exhibition was a unique opportunity to connect with the art world, and you regret missing it.

Speaking prompts

Hypothetical past situations connected with Art.

Missed Exhibition

If you had known about a major exhibition in your city, would you have gone? What might you have discovered?

Art Class

If you had taken an art class last year, what skill would you have learned?

Famous Artist

If you had met a famous artist from the past, who would you have chosen and what would you have asked?

Different Artwork

If an artist had chosen different colours or materials, how might the artwork have changed?

Museum Visit

If you had had one extra hour in a famous museum, what would you have spent it looking at?

Your Own Work

If you had started painting or drawing earlier, how might your skills have developed?

Role-play scenarios

Six reworked scenarios that keep the grammar but stay inside the Art unit.

1. The Missed Gallery Opening

Characters: Alex and a gallery assistant.

Alex arrived after a major exhibition opening had ended. Discuss what would have happened if Alex had checked the opening time earlier.

Starter: “If I had checked the gallery website, I would have arrived on time.”

2. The Forgotten Art Competition

Characters: Lisa and Tom.

Tom forgot to submit Lisa's entry form for an art competition. Discuss what might have happened if the form had been submitted.

Starter: “If you had sent the form, my painting might have been accepted.”

3. The Lost Museum Ticket

Characters: Emily and a museum employee.

Emily lost a ticket for a sold-out special exhibition. Discuss what could have happened if she had kept the ticket safe.

Starter: “If I hadn't lost the ticket, I would have seen the exhibition.”

4. The Damaged Painting

Characters: Mike and Sarah.

Mike promised to help Sarah transport a painting but did not come. The painting was damaged during the move.

Starter: “If you had come to help, we might have carried it more safely.”

5. The Lost Sketchbook

Characters: Emily and an art-school receptionist.

Emily left her sketchbook on a train before an important portfolio review. Discuss what she should have done differently.

Starter: “If I had checked my bag before leaving the train, I wouldn't have lost it.”

6. The Closed Museum

Characters: Mark and a museum guide.

Mark arrived on the museum's closed day during a short trip. Discuss how the visit might have been different if he had checked the schedule.

Starter: “If I had checked the opening days, I would have come yesterday.”

7

Writing

Short B2 writing using several Third Conditional forms.

Personal Art Decision

Write about an art-related choice you made or did not make: visiting a museum, joining a class, buying materials, finishing a project, or entering a competition. Explain what might have happened if you had chosen differently.

Alternative Art History

Choose an artist or artwork. Imagine one important detail had been different: the artist had used another style, colour palette, subject, material, or location. Describe how the result might have changed.
