Lesson overview

What is included in this Animals and Pets lesson pack.

Learning focus

Students practise common animals and pets vocabulary through two short readings, gap-fills, multiple-choice questions, True / False statements, discussion and creative writing.

The first reading focuses on the Present Simple. The second combines the Present Simple with a short Past Simple zoo episode.

The source file lists listening as a skill, but it does not contain an audio text or listening task. This page therefore includes only the activities actually provided in the lesson.

My Favourite Dog: Bob

Present Simple reading and comprehension practice.

My Favourite Dog

A1–A2

My favourite animal is a dog. I have a dog at home called Bob. He's a brown and white Jack Russell Terrier. He's very small, but he's also very fast!

Bob is always happy to see me when I come home from school. He wags his tail and jumps up to say hello. He likes playing with his toys, especially his ball.

When we go for walks in the park, he runs around. Sometimes Bob runs after other dogs. He barks a lot, but he's kind. He just wants to play!

Bob also likes cuddles. He sits on my lap and I stroke his fur. It's very soft. Sometimes he falls asleep on my lap!

I love Bob because he's my best friend.

Present Simple and Past Simple reading and comprehension practice.

Lucy’s Pet

A1–A2

Lucy loves animals. She has a pet cat called Max and a fish in a bowl. Max is very friendly and likes to sit on Lucy's lap when she watches TV. The fish doesn't do much; it swims in the bowl, but Lucy likes to see it.

One day, Lucy went to the zoo with her family. She saw lots of different animals there. There were lions, tigers, elephants, monkeys, and even penguins! Lucy's favourite animal was the giraffe. It had a very long neck and it ate leaves from a tall tree.

Lucy's friend Ben has a dog. The dog is very funny and likes to bring sticks. Lucy thinks it's cute, but she prefers cats because they are soft and quiet.

Lucy dreams of having more pets one day, maybe a hamster or a rabbit. But for now, she is happy with Max and her fish.
