Lesson overview

Grammar focus and materials for the third Animals and Pets lesson.

Objective

Students learn to use the Past Simple of have to talk about pets, animal possessions and past experiences.

  • Affirmative: had
  • Negative: didn’t have
  • Questions: Did ... have?
  • Reading comprehension and speaking with the same grammar target

The source was originally A1–B1 and mixed pets with unrelated birthday and travel topics. This version keeps the same grammar and activity structure but brings every context back to Animals and Pets, while removing accidental Past Perfect forms.

Pet-themed readings

Three short contexts for practising had.

My Dog’s Birthday Party

A1–A2

Last week, my dog Bob had a birthday party. We had a small party in our garden. Bob had a special dog cake, and he had a new red ball.

Three of my friends came with their dogs. We had water bowls, dog treats and toys for everyone. My parents had colourful decorations in the garden. We had balloons and a banner that said “Happy Birthday, Bob!”

Bob had a great time. He played with the other dogs and had lots of treats. After the party, he was tired, so he had a long sleep on his favourite blanket.

Jim the Hamster’s Adventure

A1–A2

Last year, I had a pet hamster named Jim. Jim had a cosy cage with a wheel. He had soft fur and tiny paws.

One day, Jim had an adventure. He escaped from his cage and ran around my room. I had to find him quickly.

I had a treat that Jim loved, so I had an idea. I put the treat in his cage. Jim went back inside to get it, and I closed the cage door.

After that, I had to be more careful with Jim. He had more playtime outside his cage, but I always watched him.

A Holiday with My Dog

A2

Last summer, my family and I had a holiday by the sea. We had a small cottage, and our dog Max came with us.

Max had a new blue lead and a travel bowl. Every morning, we had a long walk on the beach. Max had lots of fun running on the sand and playing with a ball.

One afternoon, we met another family. They had a friendly dog called Sam. Max and Sam had a great time together. They had water after playing because the day was very hot.

In the evenings, Max had a quiet place next to our chairs while we watched the sunset. We had a wonderful holiday, and Max had many new adventures.
