In this lesson, we learn four useful expressions about family life and relationships:

to grow up, to get along, to look after, and to care for.

To grow up means to become older and more mature.

To get along means to have a friendly relationship with someone.

To look after means to take care of someone and keep them safe.

To care for means to give help, attention, and kindness to someone who needs it.

These expressions are very useful when we talk about children, parents, brothers, sisters, grandparents, and family life in general.

Ben has a little brother called Sam. Sam is five and asks many questions every day. One morning, Sam puts on Ben’s shoes and says, “Now I grow up.” Ben laughs and says, “No, now you just have very big feet.” Mum says, “Ben, please look after Sam for twenty minutes.” Ben says, “No problem.” At first, everything goes well. Ben and Sam sit on the floor and draw animals. They get along very well. Then Sam decides that the cat also wants to draw. Ben says, “I do not think so.” But Sam cares for everyone in the family, including the cat. So he gives the cat a blue pencil. Two minutes later, there is blue colour on the floor, on the chair, and on Ben’s sock. Mum comes in and looks around. “Ben,” she says, “do you look after Sam, or does Sam lead the house?” Ben answers, “We get along very well. The problem is that we have big ideas.”
