In this lesson, we learn four useful expressions about speaking and communication:

to speak up, to talk about, to ask for, and to answer back.

To speak up means to speak more loudly or clearly so that other people can hear you.

To talk about means to speak about a subject, idea, person, or problem.

To ask for means to request something.

To answer back means to reply in an impolite or rude way, usually to a teacher, parent, or another adult.

These expressions are very useful for classroom language, family situations, and everyday conversations.

On Monday, the teacher asks the class to talk about their weekend. Anna speaks clearly. Leo also speaks clearly. Then it is Ben’s turn. Ben stands up and says something very quietly. No one hears him. The teacher says, “Ben, please speak up.” Ben speaks a little louder, but still very softly. “We still cannot hear you,” says the teacher. Ben takes a deep breath and speaks up. “At the weekend, I talked about life with my goldfish.” The class becomes very quiet. “You talked about life with your goldfish?” asks the teacher. “Yes,” says Ben. “I ask for advice. He says nothing, but his face is very wise.” Some children laugh. The teacher tries not to laugh and says, “All right, Ben. But next time, please do not answer back when I correct you.” Ben nods and says, “Of course. I will answer forward.”

"עדיין אי אפשר לשמוע אותך," אומר/ת המורה. בן לוקח נשימה עמוקה ומדבר בקול. "בסוף השבוע דיברתי על החיים עם דג הזהב שלי." הכיתה נעשית שקטה מאוד. "דיברת על החיים עם דג הזהב שלך?" שואל/ת המורה. "כן," אומר בן. "אני מבקש עצה. הוא לא אומר כלום, אבל הפנים שלו מאוד חכמות." כמה ילדים צוחקים. המורה מנסה לא לצחוק ואומר/ת: "טוב, בן. אבל בפעם הבאה, בבקשה אל תענה בחוצפה כשאני מתקנ/ת אותך." בן מהנהן ואומר: "כמובן. אני אענה קדימה."

Ben: Because my voice starts the day slowly.

Ben: I want to talk about school lunches.

Ben: Because I want to ask for bigger sandwiches.
Anna: Just ask politely.
Ben: I do.
Anna: Then why does the teacher say, “Do not answer back”?
Ben: Because sometimes my polite words wear funny clothes.
