In this lesson, we learn four very common classroom actions:

to sit down, to stand up, to come in, and to go out.

These verb combinations are easy to understand because they show clear physical actions.

Teachers use them all the time in class. Parents use them at home too.

They are also good first examples of phrasal verbs and verb combinations with short particles.

In this lesson, students meet them in commands, short sentences, a story, a dialogue, and simple practice tasks.

The goal is not only to translate them, but to use them naturally in real situations.

Tom is a good boy, but on Monday morning he is very sleepy. He comes to school with one brown shoe and one black shoe. He opens the classroom door very slowly. The teacher looks at him and says, “Tom, come in.” Tom comes in and stands near the door. The teacher says, “Sit down, Tom.” Tom sits down. Then the teacher says, “Tom, stand up and read, please.” Tom stands up, looks at his shoes, and says, “I can stand up, but I cannot read. My shoes are a big problem today.” The class laughs. The teacher laughs too. After the lesson, Tom goes out and says, “Tomorrow I will come in with two good shoes. I hope.”
